Danijel Jozic ERP as an enabler for economic growth in developing countries

Examination Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, grade: 1.7, University of Mannheim (Chair of Business Administration and Information Systems), course: Computer Science - Commercial Information Technology, language: English, abstract: In today's global economy Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are credited with their transformative capacity for national economies. They represent a promising way to lead developing countries on a path of more rapid development. But ICT for Development (ICT4D) is not only an issue of the development society. For many multinational operating software companies developing continents like Africa with a population of almost half a billion represent a huge, still untapped market. The German software company SAP AG for example is engaged in the African Drive Project (ADP). ADP is improving the South African education system by means of ICTs. SAP sees its engagement as an investment in future business areas and emerging markets in the developing world. But the corporate engagement of these big international players does not have to contradict the general aims and goals of the development society. On the contrary, the development assistance sees a crucial role in engaging in public private partnerships (PPP). The OECD notes that PPPs have become a general trend throughout the global economy. Convergence and consolidation of the fast moving ICT market demand that not one organiz...

NurNaddia Nordin, NurHaiza Nordin Labor Market Flexibility, Foreign Direct Investment and Growth

Foreign direct investment (FDI) has developed rapidly and as a main contribution on economic growth in developing countries. The benefits of FDI to host countries are inward of capital and technology that enhance innovation thereby potentially improving economic growth. The inflows of FDI will be depending on favorable location factors at host country like labor market condition. The labor markets at host countries play an important role to adapt the inflows from FDI. Host country with low levels of employment protection and flexible of labor market are commonly perceived to provide an environment conducive to investment. Our discussion is to examine the role of labor market flexibility in mediating the impact of FDI on economic growth in developing countries. We employ threshold estimation method proposed by Hansen (1999, 2000) on a comprehensive sample period from 2000 to 2010. We finds that countries that group above threshold value of more flexibility of labor market has a positive impact, where this result indicate that labor market flexibility play an important role in mediating FDI on economic growth in developing countries.

Bilal Mehmood and Parvez Azim Does Finance Matter for Growth? The Case of Developing Countries

The book 'Does Finance Matter for Growth? Case of Developing Countries', published by Lap-Lambert is my second with them. This book furnishes milieu of financial sector in developing countries. Empirical analysis of data from developing countries allows to infer the type of famous finance-growth nexus based on literature in 1960s and 1970s by Goldsmith, Cameron, Gerschenkron, McKinnon and Shaw. It sums the debate by agreeing with Lucas (1988) that the importance of financial markets is badly overstressed. Success of finance-growth relationship, in turn, hinges upon other factors such as institutional quality, degree of regulation and supervision, and other structural features of an economy. Hence, it is asserted that the importance of financial markets is still under-assessed. It shall be a pertinent scientific read for people in field of Development Economics.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Economic Policy, grade: 1,5, Technical University of Ilmenau (Institut für Wirtschaftswissenschaften), 43 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the relevance of Information and CommunicationTechnologies (ICT) for economic growth in developing economies. By reviewing thecontributions from the neoclassical and endogenous growth theory and empiricevidences for the link between ICT and economic growth, the paper clearly concludesthat ICTs facilitate economic growth, principally by providing incentives for capitaldeepening and increasing productivity through rapid technological progress. However, the impact on growth is more extensive from the long-term ICT use and networking that though requires appropriate ICT investment and complementary efforts in order that spillovers and productivity improvements are triggered and exploited totally. This paper derives the key determinants and interacting factors that, in the corresponding correct synergic combination, promote ICT's impact on growth-generating processes. For a variety of reasons, the states of these factors in developing countries provide a less ICT favourable environment for taking advantage from ICTs. These economies exhibit a lower stock of human capacities and per capita capital to trigger the productivity benefits from the ICT use. Therefore, the level of effort is higher than in the developed world to receive...

Christian Brandes The Effects of Diversity on Economic and Political Stability

Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: 1,7, language: English, abstract: Many developing countries do not only suffer from weak institutions, poor economic performance and corruption, but also from separatist movements and violent civil conflicts. The question arises why some countries could achieve economic growth and development, while others never experienced considerable economic development and are trapped in a vicious circle of re-occurring violent conflicts and economic deterioration. Since developing countries tend to be more diverse in terms of ethnicity, language and religion and many civil conflicts appear to have an ethnic or religious component, diversity is regarded as a main cause of economic and political instability. Furthermore, many scholars consider higher levels of diversity in the least developed countries to be the crucial factor that leads to inefficient policy decisions and impedes growth and development. This master thesis addresses the question how diversity affects economic and political stability and elaborates appropriate parameters which are further used in a composite indicator (CI) to quantify a country's stability, respectively instability. The thesis is structured as follows:After a review of the literature on the relations between diversity and economic development and civil conflicts in chapter two, the historic and environmental conditions under which different ethnic and linguistic groups emerg...

Especially through the recent global crisis, the key role of developing and emerging countries, as they have sought to sustain global economic growth, has become the focal point of worldwide interest (Rao 2010). According to McKinsey (2010), "an ongoing shift in global economic activity from developed to developing economies, accompanied by growth in the number of consumers in emerging markets, are the global developments that executives around the world view as the most important for business and the most positive for their own companies profits over the next five years." The results of recent surveys, such as those by the International Monetary Fund, predict that developing and emerging markets will grow by 6.3% in 2011 In turn this has evoked a significant sense of urgency among several MNE executives (Rao 2010). Furthermore, a survey by McKinsey (2011) found that in the coming decade more then 45% of global GDP growth will be contributed by C...

Yinghua Jin Is Fiscal Decentralization Good for Economic Growth.

This book provides an empirical test of the effects of fiscal decentralization and horizontal fiscal equalization on economic growth and examines the potential trade-off between horizontal fiscal equalization and economic growth in both China and India. A comparative study of these two neighbours in Asia has shown that the degree of fiscal decentralization in both countries is far from the point where its effect on economic growth becomes positive. Despite the dangers of widening disparities in terms of interregional fiscal resource distribution from further decentralization, no substantial evidence shows a trade-off between horizontal fiscal equalization and growth in either country. In addition, both the 1994 Tax Sharing System (TSS) reform in China and the 1991 economic reforms in India have contributed to economic growth. An in-depth and more thorough going fiscal decentralization with greater emphasis on equalization of fiscal disparities are required in order to assure sustainable economic growth as well as social harmony in these two Asian countries.

These relationships were found to be significant as well. Some policy implications for coming out of debt overhang scenario are also presented.

Document from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 14, University of Sarajevo, language: English, abstract: In this book linear panel data estimators are employed to investigate the relationship between life insurance and economic growth. This study contributes to previous studies by using Maximum likelihood estimation of dynamic panel that was not used in previous studies concerning the aforementioned relationship; by controlling for number of factors thought to influence economic growth; by referring to a much larger number of countries and by exploring the relationship between life insurance and economic growth while controlling for the degree of financial sector development, as well as for the regional and income disparities. Sixteen models that explore the impact of control variables integrated singly in the equations and an integrated model that controls for the impact of all key variables are estimated. Empirical results reveal a significant positive relationship between life insurance and economic growth in models -. Education is reported to have a positive impact on economic growth. Government spending is found to have a negative impact on economic growth, while model reports that inflation has a negative impact on economic growth. Trade openness is not reported to have a significant impact on economic growth in model. Model reveals a significant positive impact of banking sector on economic growth; significant negative impact of non-life insuranc...

This book empirically examines the role of human capital in the economic growth of selected South Asian countries Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. The analysis is based on the time series data during 1986-2010 and a comparison has been made between three countries about their performance in growth of their economies. Health and Education are used as proxy for human capital. For this purpose, a three step methodology has been adopted. As first step unit root test is applied to test the stationarity of data. After that cointegration test and granger causality test is applied to test the causality between the variables. The results show that human capital is positively and significantly linked with economic growth of the countries under discussion.

Stephen Bodybobton Antwi C Outward Foreign Direct Investment Impact on Economic Growth in Developing Countries. Empirical Evidence from Ghana

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2012 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, Xiamen University, language: English, abstract: Foreign direct investment (FDI) is one of the economic growth stimulus due to its associated variables such as capital investment, technical know-how, knowledge transfer and managerial competence required for economic growth. In the last decade, China has emerged on the international financial scene as both financier and investment partner to African economies. Many African economies such as the oil producing and exporting ones have witnessed streams of China's FDI in their economies whereas non-oil exporting ones have accessed some of China's FDI in selective sectors. This paper aims at investigating the relationship between China's FDI and economic growth in Ghana measured by real average annual domestic product (GDP) per capita growth for the period 2001-2010. By using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model, the result indicates that China's FDI has negative significant effect on Ghana's economic growth. However, it exerts different effects on value added in the three economic sectors.

Donny Bagus Prasetya Granger Causality Analysis on Indonesia and Malaysia Business Sectors

Tourism and export are important business sectors for economic growth, and plays important roles in developing countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. To examine the causality among tourism, using international tourist arrivals (ITA) as a proxy, export, and economic growth, using real GDP as a proxy, Johansen's cointegration test and Granger causality have been employed. The relationship among tourism, export, and economic growth is essential to policy development in developing countries. By using annual data from 1980 to 2010, for Indonesia’s time series, results show that bidirectional Granger causality runs between tourism and export. While, a unidirectional Granger causality runs from GDP to export as well as from GDP to tourism. Meanwhile, for Malaysia’s time series, results show that there is no Granger causality between variables. However, neither export-led growth hypothesis nor tourism-led hypothesis is supported for both Indonesia’s and Malaysia’s time series.

Developing Countries in the World Trading System: The Uruguay Round and Beyond

Experience suggests that trade liberalization has contributed substantially to the remarkable growth of industrialised countries. However, for various reasons many developing countries have not yet been able to integrate successfully into global markets and reap the growth-inducing and poverty-reducing benefits of trade. This book argues that while developing countries are heavily represented in the WTO - accounting for about four fifths of its membership -there is still plenty of scope for the world trading system to work more effectively in their interests. The book examines the achievements of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations in reforming the world trading system and the challenges to future reforms. It begins with an overview of the genesis of the world trading system and moves on to examine the key issues as they relate to developing countries. These include further liberalization of agricultural trade; abolition of the Multifibre Arrangement; environmental and labour standards; competition policy; regional integration in South East Asia; and the implications for developing Asian countries of the liberalization of the Chinese economy and its WTO membership. Furthermore, the book discusses the links between trade liberalization and poverty reduction -drawing on the experience of Asian countries - and puts forward arguments on how trade liberalization could effect a greater reduction in poverty. This is a timely and succinct presentation of the critical issues relat...

But China is only the last step in an array of development countries from East / Southeast Asian region. Johanna Avato Highly skilled labour migration. Consequences for exporting countries

Diploma Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Economics - International Economic Relations, grade: 1.3, University of Applied Sciences Bingen (Lehrstuhl für Internationale Wirtschaftspolitik), 100 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The emigration of highly skilled people, the so-called brain drain (BD) has prompted a significant amount of literature, and suggestions about consequences of high skilled mobility for sending countries (SCs) are numerous but rather ambiguous. Historically, two major approaches can be distinguished. A negative view of the detrimental consequences for SCs due to the loss of human capital, and hence an increasing inequality among least developed countries (LDCs) and developed (DCs) (SCs and receiving countries (RCs)) characterised the discussion in the 1960s and 1970s. This view was intensified by the end of the 1980s, as the new growth theory stressed the importance of human capital as the main driver of economic growth. Accordingly, the loss of human capital would deprive SCs of a major prerequisite for growth and permanently hamper development. Lately, however, this pessimistic vision of accentuating the disadvantages for growth in SCs has been challenged by a more positive point of view. Expatriates are not seen as a loss anymore but instead as a resource which can be employed in favour of the SC. Rather pragmatically, this transnational view admits that, as long as incentives such as inequalities in many areas persist, ...
