Jeffrey J. Noonan The Guitar in America. Victorian Era to Jazz Age

From parlor instrument to jazz electric, a study of musical evolution in America's progressive eraThe Guitar in America offers a history of the instrument from America's late Victorian period to the Jazz Age. The narrative traces America's BMG (banjo, mandolin, and guitar) community, a late nineteenth-century musical and com-mercial movement dedicated to introducing these instru-ments into America's elite musical establishments.Using surviving BMG magazines, the author details an almost unknown history of the guitar during the movement's heyday, tracing the guitar's transformation from a refined parlor instrument to a mainstay in jazz and popular music. In the process, he not only introduces musicians (including numerous women guitarists) who led the movement, but also examines new techniques and instruments. Chapters consider the BMG movement's impact on jazz and popular music, the use of the guitar to promote attitudes towards women and minorities, and the challenges foreign guitarists such as Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia presented to America's musicians. This volume opens a new chapter on the guitar in America, considering its cultivated past and documenting how banjoists and mandolinists aligned their instruments to it in an effort to raise social and cultural standing. At the same time, the book considers the BMG community within America's larger musical scene, examining its efforts as manifestations of this country's uneasy cou...

Julia Simon Rousseau Among the Moderns. Music, Aesthetics, Politics

Renowned for his influence as a political philosopher, a writer, and an autobiographer, Jean-Jacques Rousseau is known also for his lifelong interest in music. He composed operas and other musical pieces, invented a system of numbered musical notation, engaged in public debates about music, and wrote at length about musical theory. Critical analysis of Rousseau's work in music has been principally the domain of musicologists, rarely involving the work of scholars of political theory or literary studies. In Rousseau Among the Moderns, Julia Simon puts forth fresh interpretations of The Social Contract, the Discourse on the Origin of Inequality, and the Confessions, as well as other texts. She links Rousseau's understanding of key concepts in music, such as tuning, harmony, melody, and form, to the crucial problem of the individual's relationship to the social order. The choice of music as the privileged aesthetic object enables Rousseau to gain insight into the role of the aesthetic realm in relation to the social and political body in ways often associated with later thinkers. Simon argues that much of Rousseau's "modernism" resides in the unique role that he assigns to music in forging communal relations.

Laura M. Bolt Musical Matings - Sexual Selection and the Origins of Music

Charles Darwin suggested that in the evolutionary past, women preferred to mate with musical men. Men made music in order to attract potential mates, and women chose the best musicians to father their children. Geoffrey Miller recently furthered Darwin's suggestions. However, the theories of both researchers are limited by their ethnocentric perceptions of musical behaviour. This book expands the theories of Darwin and Miller, evaluating music's origins from a cross-cultural perspective by examining the role of music in the courtship rituals of various cultures worldwide. The author constructs a nuanced social critique of Darwin's theory of music, placing it in Victorian England while identifying some fundamental difficulties with his evolutionary model, such as male bias and the conflation of music and animal signaling. This book is a valuable addition to the literature on music's origins, and goes a long way towards closing the open question of possible sexual-selective benefits of musical behaviours. It will be of interest to scholars in the fields of evolutionary musicology, sexual selection, sociology, evolutionary psychology, anthropology, Victorian history, and feminism.

Kayren Woolum THe Effects of Music in the Early Childhood Classroom

Music in Early Childhood Anyone who has been in an early childhood classroom knows that music is an important part of children's lives. Music is not only a part of our culture; it has a biological effect on our minds. While researchers are still studying the specific effects of music on cognitive learning and brain activity, studies have shown that music does have a positive impact. Teachers of young children have an awesome responsibility as they unearth the potential of their students. Many teachers feel inept in teaching music because they believe that they do not sing well enough or do not have enough musical knowledge. This leads them to rely on taped music and to use music as a tool for transitions rather than a cognitive area taught for its own value. Teachers can impart musical concepts to children in developmentally appropriate ways. This book will give early childhood teachers the means to accomplish this goal. This guide will assist teachers as they develop and present developmentally appropriate activities that teach musical concepts.

If I were to give my own definition of a poet it would say a poet is someone who can take a group of words and put a hundred different emotions and meanings into them. Albert Schweitzer The Quest of the Historical Jesus. A Critical Study its Progress from Reimarus to Wrede

A little over a hundred years ago, Dr. Albert Schweitzer set forth the definitive survey of studies into the historical Jesus up to that point. His book, originally in German, was a major event that reverberates to this day. Even though many people will find his conclusions objectionable, the book needs to be on the shelf of any serious Bible scholar. This edition is based on the first English edition, translated by W. Montgomery. A foreword puts Dr. Schweitzer's book in the context of the hundred years of research into the 'historical Jesus' that has followed the publication of the book. This edition also includes an 8 page index to aid the serious researcher.

James E. Jr. Miller T. S. Eliot. The Making of an American Poet, 1888-1922

Late in his life T. S. Eliot, when asked if his poetry belonged in the tradition of American literature, replied: "I'd say that my poetry has obviously more in common with my distinguished contemporaries in America than with anything written in my generation in England. That I'm sure of. . . . In its sources, in its emotional springs, it comes from America." In T. S. Eliot: The Making of an American Poet, James Miller offers the first sustained account of Eliot's early years, showing that the emotional springs of his poetry did indeed come from America.Born in 1888 in St. Louis, Missouri, T. S. Eliot grew up along the Mississippi River, only a few miles down river from Hannibal, the boyhood home of another great American writer, Mark Twain. Miller recounts Eliot's early years in St. Louis schools and follows him in the summers as he vacationed with his family in their Gloucester, Massachusetts, home perched on the Atlantic Ocean's edge. In 1905 at the age of seventeen, Eliot left the Midwest for what would prove to be a lasting separation-attending Milton Academy in Massachusetts for one year and then Harvard for nine years, as an undergraduate and as a graduate student in philosophy. The first time he ventured abroad was 1910, when he spent a crucial year studying in Paris and forming a deep friendship with the Frenchman Jean Verdenal. It was not until 1914, when Eliot was 26 years old, that he left America for England-and found reasons to stay th...

The novel is a fictionalised account of one man's experiences of the year 1665, in which the Great Plague struck the city of London. Defoe was only five years old in 1665, and the book itself was published under the initials H. F. The novel probably was based on the journals of Defoe's uncle, Henry Foe.

Cultural Psychology of Musical Experience

A volume in Advances in Cultural PsychologyThis book forms a basis and a starting point for a closer dialogue between musicologists, anthropologists and psychologists to achieve a better understanding of the cultural psychology of musical experience. This is done by arranging a meeting point or an arena in which different aspects of psychology and musicology touch and encounters each other due to how the two fields might be defined today. In line with this the book consists of a group of scholars that have their feet solidly grounded in psychology, social science or musicology, but at the same time have a certain interest in uniting them. On this basis it is divided into five parts, which investigates musical sensations, musical experiences, musical transformations, musical fundamentals and the notion of a cultural psychology of music. Thus another aim of this book is to prepare the basis for a further growth of a cultural psychology that is able to include the experiences of music as a basis for understanding the ordinary human life. Thus this book should be of interest for those who want to investigate the mysterious intersection between music and psychology.

Federal Social Policy. The Historical Dimension

Reflecting the growing interest in social policy history, this book provides a penetrating examination of the development of social policy in the 20th-century America. An introductory chapter serving as an overview to the field is followed by seven original essays which explore the historical context for understanding the formulation, implementation, and administration of social policy.Robert Kelly's foreword discusses the growth of policy history in recent years. In his introduction Donald Critchlow argues that ""policy history"" encompasses historical reconstructions of development in particular social policy areas and attempts to make overall sense of policy-making processes. The chapters are presented in two sections. The first, Reconstructions of Policy Developments, includes W. Andrew Achenbaum's account of federal policies toward the aged since 1920; Brian Balogh's discussion of the emergence of the Social Security Board as a political actor, from 1935 to 1939; and Judith Sealander's examination of policy formation and women's issues between 1940 and 1980. In the second section, The Historical and Institutional Contexts of Policy-making, Morton Keller addresses social policy and the liberal state in 20th-century America; Jack L. Walker examines interests, political parties, and policy formation in the American democracy; and Edward Berkowitz concludes with an essay on social welfare and the American state. Alexandra Fol Exhalation / Expiration for Wind Ensemble

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Musicology, grade: Pass, McGill University (Schulich School of Music), course: Composition, language: English, abstract: Exhalation / Expiration, a composition for a wind ensemble of thirty-four players, continues a series of musical homages by the composer honouring her father, Alexander Fol. The composition unites different musical devices to accomplish a metaphorical mapping of the infection of a healthy body with a mortal sickness, followed by the organism's gradual demise. The work's duration is twenty-one-and-a-half minutes. The design of these materials, which incorporates the form, harmony, rhythm and orchestration, applies an approach to musical semiotics informed by the philosophical doctrine of Thracian Oral Orphism, as well as by medical research on terminally ill cancer patients. The author defines two types of musical signs, the event-type and the process-type, and decides upon a musical realization thereof at the formal and structural levels. In the composition, the signs are organized as musical symbols that portray the gradual transition between the types of music symbolizing health - 'A' - and sickness - 'B' - represented by types of harmonic, rhythmic and orchestrational treatment.

However, this research project was aimed at determining to what extent a newlydesigned music listening test impacts on students‟ success rate in being judged to have particular musical aptitude. The purpose of this research was to evaluate what students score respectively forfour elements of music (pitch, melody, rhythm and texture) through a musical aptitude test designed by the author in consultation with colleagues in the Music Department at a school in North London in the United Kingdom .These tests were divided into two stages with students aged 10-13, of mixed genders and from different cultural backgrounds. The first focussed on the listening test (questionnaire) for a sample of 160 students. The second stage included practical performances (interviews and observations) and aural tests based on the elements: Rhythm, Melody, Improvisation, Two-part melody and Texture. The results of the first stage revealed that the students particularly achieved high scores for the elements of music: melody and pitch. Sebastian Kirschner The Social Origins of Music

Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2011 in the subject Biology - Evolution, grade: magna cum laude, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Theoretische Biologie), language: English, abstract: Creating music is a distinctive behavior of our species: Humans of all cultures occasionally gather to make music together. However, there is discussion amongst scientists as to whether such behavior is a manifestation of innate psychological mechanisms that evolved as adaptations for music, or whether the diversity of musical behavior simply exemplifies the inventiveness of the human mind, in which case music should be considered a product of human culture. Scholars advocating the latter view divide further into those who believe that music is an evolutionary by-product, existing only for hedonistic reasons, and those who argue that certain musical behaviors emerged because they serve some culturally adaptive function. The goal of my dissertation was to add new empirical data to this debate by conducting behavioral studies with preschool children. In study 1 I tested the hypothesis that certain musical rituals emerged to foster social bonding, ultimately increasing prosocial in-group behavior. I found that joint music making enhances subsequent cooperative and helpful behavior among pairs of 4-year-old children. In study 2 I investigated the ontogeny of rhythmic entrainment, our ability to move in synchrony to a musical beat. I found that children spontaneously entrain th...

Edward Winslow Good Newes from New England. A True Relation of Things Very Remarkable at the Plantation Plimouth in England

Good Newes from New England, first published in 1624, was written by one of the first Pilgrim leaders to enter the United States. Edward Winslow, an English immigrant and plantation leader from the Mayflower, wrote in a journal his account of the new world, which was subsequently published in order to convince more pilgrims to make the long voyage to America. The entries, which are separated into months, discuss a wide range of topics, from food and weather to the Native Americans and their reception and treatment of the pilgrims. Winslow's account is a remarkable primary source for those interested in America's early foundations.Edward Winslow (1595-1655) was an English immigrant on the Mayflower, a leader and founder of the Plymouth colony, and governor of Plymouth in 1633, 1636, and 1644. Winslow also founded Marshfield in Plymouth where he owned an estate called Careswell and lived until his death.
