Bellundagi Veerabhadrappa, S. Patil Suresh, Jadhav Vilas An Economic Analysis of Bt Cotton Seed Production in India

The Bt (Bacillus Thuringiensis) cotton seed production focussed on the socio-economic characteristics of contract farmers, cost and return, efficiency of resource use and problems faced by the farmers in Bt cotton seed production under different companies. The total cost of Bt cotton seed production varied from one company contract farmers to other company contract farmers. The Cobb-Douglas production function revealed that the farmers who have contracted with different seed companies, the use of seed was found to be optimum across all company contract farmers. Whereas, fertilizer resource was over utilized by farmers who have contracted with various companies. Non availability of trained labour and prevalence of high wage rate were the major constraints in case of production, where as poor technical assistance and low contract price were the contractual problems. Therefore the Bt cotton seed production technology had positive impact on Socio- economic status of farmers by increase in yield and reducing cost on inputs thereby increase in income and also standard of living.

Sopheap Sreng, Bernadette P. Resurreccion ICTs in Flood Management and Its Impacts on Rural Livelihoods

Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) claim to offer some solutions for better disaster preparedness. Likewise, some disaster management information have failed due to its limited understanding of social and technological aspects for communications and some may even reinforce gender inequalities. This study explores an integrated approach of gender, livelihoods, ICTs and non-ICTs communications to flood management. Early warning strategies, during flood interventions and post flood recoveries are discussed and analyzed in communities of Laotian and Tompoun ethnic groups along the Cambodia Sesan River, who experienced the Ketsana typhoon in 2009. It shows how access to and control of ICTs and in flood management is not just male centred but also authoritative in nature and reproducing the male bread-winner model. Thus, the findings demonstrate the importance of how ICTs and non-ICT tools must be combined to effectively enhancing flood management and emphasize that further ICTs policies and gender approaches related to flood management should be enhanced.

Abel Manaye Technical Efficiency of Sesame Production

Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Business economics - Supply, Production, Logistics, , course: Agricultural Economics, language: English, abstract: This study aimed to analyze the technical efficiency of sesame production in Humera area and to identify major factors that cause efficiency differentials of smallholder farmers. The objective of the study is to measure the technical efficiency of small holder farmers in sesame production. The study was conducted using a cross sectional data collected in 2015/2016-production year from a total sample of 110 households. Cobb-Douglas function was employed to estimate technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in sesame production. The finding of the study indicated that there is inefficiency in the production of sesame in the study area. The estimation of the frontier model with inefficiency variables shows that the mean technical efficiency of farmers is 0.69 (69%). This implies that production of sesame can be increased by 31 percent given the existing technological level. This indicates that the farmers did not using production inputs efficiently in such a way that they give their maximum potential. The estimated stochastic production frontier model together with the inefficiency parameters suggests that any attempt to strengthen technical efficiency of smallholder farmers in the study area must give due attention to the improvement of the principal causes for efficiency differentials such as education, age, ...

Joel Chandler Harris Mingo by Harris, Fiction, Classics

Joel Chandler Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, the illegitimate son of Mary Harris. At 13 Harris became an apprentice printer on The Countryman, a plantation newspaper edited and published by Joseph Addison Turner, a highly literate planter, lawyer and writer. Harris then worked on newspapers in several Southern cities. In 1876 Harris began a twenty-four-year association with the Atlanta Constitution. He used folklore, fiction, dialect and other devices of local color to picture both black and white Georgians under slavery and Reconstruction.Best known as the creator of Uncle Remus, and Remus's creation Brer Rabbit, in other fictional works Harris enlarged his portrayal of Southerners to include aristocrats, members of the middle class, mountaineers and poor white farmers. Harris disowned regionalism in art, saying "My idea is that truth is more important than sectionalism, and that literature that can be labeled Northern, Southern, Western, or Eastern, is not worth labeling at all", yet his writings reflected the region and he was a truly Southern voice in literature.
